To clarify the thermostat rebate program which is offered by Alberta Rebate Program for $100, I wold like first explain a bit about how thermostat works.
Thermostat is a device that works as an on-off switch with sensing the temperature. It is used to turn off and on the units that has to do with temperature such as electrical or gas units that need to turn on and off.
The Bimetal strip
The simplest traditional thermostat has two pieces of different metals bolted together to form what’s called a bimetal strip. The strip works as a bridge in an electrical circuit connected to your heating system.
Normally the “bridge is down”, the strip carries electricity through the circuit, and the heating is on. When the strip gets hot, one of the metals expands more than the other so the whole strip bends very slightly. Eventually, it bends so much that it breaks open the circuit. The “bridge is up”, the electricity instantly switches off, the heating cuts out, and the room starts to cool.
As the room cools, the thermometer coil winds up until the mercury switch tips back to the left. The mercury is a conductor when moves make the connection or take the connection off.
With advanced technology, the industry of thermostat goes further and made a lot progress in this field.
The first generation of digital version was a thermostat with on-off switch, with having option of cool or even fan for furnaces to circulating the house without running the heat in summer, for that also called summer switch. Then programmable thermostat came to the market. The programmable thermostat save a lot of energy if programed correctly. When people are not home automatically turn to lower temperature or if people sleep at the night.
The newest technology will be the thermostat with wi-fi technology. There are few well known wifi thermostat, like Nest, Ecobee and Honeywell Lyric T6pro.
Choosing a thermostat for a furnace need some knowledge of the heating system. The type of furnace or air-conditioning you have it is important. For example, if you have 2 stage furnace then you choose a single stage thermostat, as matter of fact you are not taking advantages of the all efficiency and stages correctly.
Sometimes the house has only 2 wire for the thermostat but today most of the thermostat need at least 4 wires, and the best wiring system is with 6 wires or even 7 wires.
If the furnace is 2 stage, then one wire for stage 1 (W1), one wire for stage 2 (W2), one wire for power (C ), one wire for heat (R ), one wire for fan (G), and if the AC is 2 stage, one wire for cooling stage 1 (Y1) and one wire for cooling stage 2 (Y2) so all together.
Fast device or Add a wire
This device is design to make from 2 wire 4 wire or more. Or even from 4 wire making 6 wires. Install the Fast is also need some knowledge however the diagram of wiring come with the kit.
This device contain of a sender and receiver. The sender is putting in the back of the thermostat and the receiver which is also another device put inside the furnace.
The government of Alberta to encourage people to buy the latest technology in Thermostat which is the wifi kind a $100. The process is very easy, you can go online and fill up a form and taking a picture of the receipt that has registered seller and the invoice should have an invoice number.
